7 DAYS LEMOSHO ROUTE ON MT.KILIMANJARO
The 7-day Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a popular choice for those seeking a well-balanced trek that offers a combination of stunning scenery, diverse landscapes, and a relatively high success rate for reaching the summit. Starting on the western side of the mountain, the route takes you through a variety of ecosystems, beginning with the lush rainforests at lower elevations. As you ascend, the landscape shifts to the vast Shira Plateau, where you are treated to expansive views of the surrounding area and the mountain itself. The route is designed to provide a gradual increase in altitude, which helps with acclimatization and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
Throughout the 7-day journey, you’ll encounter a range of terrains, from the rocky expanse of the Shira Plateau to the rugged beauty of the Barranco Wall and the alpine desert leading to Barafu Camp. The shorter duration of the trek means the pace is slightly more demanding, requiring physical endurance, but it also offers an efficient path to the summit. The final ascent begins in the early morning hours, taking you to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, just as the sun rises over the African plains. The sense of achievement upon reaching the top is immense, and the descent provides a final opportunity to take in the breathtaking beauty of Kilimanjaro’s diverse environments before returning to the base.

The 7-day Lemosho Route also allows trekkers to experience the quieter and less crowded paths of Kilimanjaro, offering a sense of solitude and connection with nature. Despite the shorter duration, the route still includes essential acclimatization days, such as the trek to the Lava Tower, ensuring your body adjusts to the altitude changes. The camaraderie with your fellow trekkers and the support from experienced guides enhance the journey, making the challenging moments more manageable and the achievements more rewarding. Whether it's the thrill of scaling the Barranco Wall or the serenity of camping under the starry African sky, each day on the Lemosho Route is filled with unique experiences that culminate in the unforgettable moment of standing on Africa's highest peak.
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration and permits. Afterward, you start trekking through the lush rainforest, gradually ascending to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) at 2,650 meters. The trek is relatively short and easy, allowing you to acclimate while enjoying the dense forest, rich with unique flora and fauna, including monkeys and various bird species.
The trek continues from Mti Mkubwa Camp, moving through the forest and entering the heath and moorland zone. As you ascend, the vegetation changes, and the landscape opens up to reveal stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s peaks. The day ends at Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 meters, located on the edge of the Shira Plateau, where you'll spend the night surrounded by expansive views and a more rugged terrain.
You’ll trek across the Shira Plateau, a vast high-altitude desert, with gentle ascents and wide-open views of the surrounding landscape. As you move toward Shira 2 Camp at 3,850 meters, you’ll explore volcanic formations like the Shira Cathedral. The day also includes an acclimatization hike to higher altitudes before returning to camp, helping your body adjust to the increasing elevation.
The trek takes you from Shira 2 Camp to the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, a key acclimatization point. This day is particularly important for adjusting to the altitude, as you "climb high, sleep low." After spending time at the Lava Tower, you'll descend to Barranco Camp at 3,900 meters, where you’ll be greeted by the dramatic views of the Barranco Wall and the southern glaciers of Kilimanjaro.
The day begins with the challenging ascent of the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that requires some scrambling. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Karanga Valley. You’ll then trek to Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters, where the rest of the day is spent acclimatizing and preparing for the higher altitudes ahead.
From Karanga Camp, you make your way to Barafu Camp at 4,673 meters, the base camp for the final summit push. The terrain becomes more barren and rocky, reflecting the alpine desert environment. After arriving at Barafu, you’ll rest and prepare for the midnight departure to the summit. The anticipation builds as you settle in for a few hours of sleep before the most challenging part of the trek.
